If you are considering a career as a massage therapist in London, you may be wondering what qualifications you need, where to study and how long it takes to become a professional massage therapist.
If you are particularly interested in sports massage and remedial soft tissue therapy, studying for a Level 5 qualification in Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy can provide a comprehensive route into the profession.
At the North London School of Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy (NLSSM), our bespoke Level 5 Diploma is designed for people who want to develop the knowledge and practical skills required to work as a professional sports massage and soft tissue therapist.
What qualifications do you need to become a massage therapist?
There are different routes into massage therapy, depending on the type of massage you want to practise and the level of training you are looking for.
At NLSSM, you do not need to complete separate Level 3 or Level 4 qualifications before starting our Level 5 Diploma. If you are completely new to massage, you can begin by completing our one-day Massage Introduction Course before progressing onto the Level 5.
This provides a direct route for beginners who want to train as a sports massage therapist, while the course is also suitable for existing practitioners who want to develop their knowledge and practical skills further.
What do you learn on a Level 5 sports massage course?
Becoming a professional massage therapist involves much more than learning a collection of massage techniques!
Our Level 5 sports massage course covers anatomy and physiology, assessment and palpation, functional anatomy, range of movement testing, biomechanics, pain neurophysiology and foundational massage techniques.
Students then progress to advanced soft tissue therapy techniques, including Soft Tissue Release, Muscle Energy Techniques, Neuromuscular Techniques, Trigger Point Therapy, Positional Release, Strain and Counter Strain, connective tissue manipulation and an introduction to myofascial release.
The course also covers postural assessment, current rehabilitation concepts, treatment planning, contraindications, professional practice and onward referral. This combination of practical skills, clinical knowledge and assessment helps students develop the ability to understand their clients and make informed decisions about treatment.
How long does it take to become a massage therapist?
The NLSSM Level 5 Diploma is a part-time massage therapy course in London and takes approximately 10 to 11 months to complete. The course is divided into three modules, with 22 days of tuition spread throughout the programme. There are weekday and weekend course options, allowing students to fit their training around work and other commitments.
Becoming a confident massage therapist takes time. While shorter courses can be useful for learning individual techniques, developing the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to work safely and effectively with a wide range of clients requires time, hands-on practice and experience. Our course is structured to give students the opportunity to build these skills progressively, rather than trying to cover everything in a few days.
Teaching takes place at The Hub in Tottenham, North London, a few minutes’ walk from Tottenham Hale Rail and Underground Station.

The course combines practical, hands-on teaching with online learning, assessments and opportunities for students to develop their skills through additional practice and the student clinic.
What can you do after completing a Level 5 sports massage qualification?
A Level 5 qualification in Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy can provide a professional foundation for a career in sports massage and soft tissue therapy.
Graduates can go on to work independently, join established clinics or work in sporting environments with sports teams, clubs, dancers and athletes. The qualification can also complement existing professional qualifications and provide a foundation for further specialist training.
At NLSSM, our teaching team brings experience from a wide range of professional settings. Several of our tutors (including myself) work within professional football alongside their teaching roles at NLSSM, giving students the opportunity to learn from therapists who are actively working in high-level sporting environments.
This real-world experience is an important part of our teaching, helping students understand how the knowledge and practical skills they develop during their Level 5 training can be applied in professional practice.
Why choose NLSSM for your massage therapy training?
Choosing the right massage therapy course is an important step when starting a career in the industry. A course should give you more than a collection of techniques to practise. It should help you develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to work with real clients.
NLSSM has been teaching sports massage and remedial soft tissue therapy since 2004. Our bespoke Level 5 Diploma is accredited by OCN London, who are a national awarding organisation recognised by Ofqual.
The course combines practical, hands-on teaching with assessment, clinical reasoning, treatment planning and rehabilitation, giving students a comprehensive foundation for a career as a sports massage and soft tissue therapist.
