David Graham: Muscles or Nerves? Back, Buttock and Leg Pain in the Treatment Room

An exciting presentation from NLSSM alumni and Tutor, David Graham!

It’s not uncommon for clients to come to us with pain and tightness in the back, buttock or leg. Is this coming from a disc, a sensitive nerve, or something else? In this talk David will go through the anatomy and physiology of nerves and what role soft tissue therapists can have in the management of clients with disc or nerve pain. He’ll discuss what questions to ask and what to look for in your assessment, so you can figure out what is in your scope and when to refer. He’ll also cover why stretching is often counterproductive, how to adapt your hands-on work and how you can work alongside physiotherapists and osteopaths.

About David

David Graham graduated from NLSSM in 2016 and is now a registered osteopath and lead tutor at the school. He co-developed the Clinical Assessment & Treatment of the Lower Limb course with Cassandra Gramozi. He works in private practice in Leeds, treating a wide range of musculoskeletal complaints in patients including older adults, manual workers, sports enthusiasts and desk workers.

He has a particular interest in working with neck, upper back and head complaints, including headaches, and nerve-related problems, and has a keen interest in how biomechanics plays into all of this. He’s passionate about both treating and teaching and makes sure that everything he teaches comes directly from his own experience in clinic.

Laura Moss: Beyond Muscle Pain: Recognising Bone Stress Injuries

About Laura

Laura is an experienced Soft Tissue Therapist with a background in elite sport, having worked across athletics, cycling, football and rugby. Her experience includes supporting national teams and world-class athletes at major competitions, including the Olympic Games and World Athletics Championships.

She currently works part-time as a Physiotherapy Assistant within Chelsea Football Club’s Academy, alongside continuing her work as a Soft Tissue Therapist with British Athletics and running her own private clinic.

Alongside her clinical work, Laura is in the final year of her BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree at the University of Salford. Combining her extensive soft tissue therapy experience with her developing physiotherapy practice has broadened her approach to athlete assessment, injury management, rehabilitation and return to sport.

As an alumni Soft Tissue Therapist herself, Laura brings a practical perspective shaped by working across a range of elite sporting environments. She is passionate about continuing professional development and the evolving role of Soft Tissue Therapists within multidisciplinary sports medicine teams.
