Massage therapy is a deeply rewarding field that offers many opportunities for practitioners to help others through touch. However, the path to becoming a qualified sports massage or soft tissue therapist involves more than just learning techniques — it also requires meeting certain education and certification standards.
In the UK, therapists progress through different certification levels, each of which provides a deeper understanding of anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic techniques. These qualifications are crucial for ensuring that practitioners have the knowledge and skills to perform massage safely and effectively when working with athletes, active individuals, and anyone with soft tissue injuries or musculoskeletal conditions.

At NLSSM, we offer a bespoke Level 5, the highest qualification. The good news is that you do not need to complete any Levels prior to be eligible to join – yep, that means you can come straight onto our course as a beginner!
Level 3 QUALIFICATION
A Level 3 qualification in Sports Massage and Soft Tissue Therapy is an entry-level qualification to practice as a sports massage therapist in the UK.
It focuses on basic sports massage techniques, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. This level is designed for those who want to offer massage therapy to a broad range of clients with soft tissue issues.

Level 4 QUALIFICATION

This level is designed for therapists who want to work with more severe injuries and offer a greater depth of care in rehabilitation and recovery.

Level 5 QUALIFICATION
Level 5 is the highest qualification available in sports and remedial soft tissue therapy, and is the Level that we offer at NLSSM – a bespoke Level 5 Qualification in Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy. This level is aimed at experienced practitioners who want to specialise in more complex injury management, advanced rehabilitation techniques, and therapeutic modalities.
Level 5 therapists are highly skilled in treating chronic conditions and soft tissue injuries and can often work independently in clinical settings or with professional athletes.

OCN (Open College Network)
Our Level 5 is a Bespoke Qualification that has been developed to meet the specific needs of our learners. It has been accredited by OCN London against established quality benchmarks. OCN London is a national awarding organisation, recognised by the qualifications regulator for England (Ofqual). The learning outcomes and assessment criteria in this qualification have been benchmarked at Level 5 using the national qualification framework’s level descriptors.
With an NLSSM Level 5 qualification, you are eligible to join many organisations such as:
- The London & Counties Society of Physiologists (The LCSP) were founded in 1919 and they’re the oldest-established and largest organisation of private practitioners of remedial massage and manipulative therapy in the U.K!
- The Complementary Health Professionals (CHP), set up in 1994 actively work with their peers within the profession to support the interests of their members. They are a holistic organization that welcomes a wide range of qualifications such as Reflexology, Aromatherapy, and Reiki.
- The Sports Therapy Association, a member focused professional body that aims to provide open, honest and ethical guidance to Sports Therapists, Soft Tissue Therapists and Sports Injury Professionals.

What is Ofqual regulation and why is it important?
Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) is the government regulator responsible for overseeing qualifications, exams, and awarding organisations in England. When an awarding body is regulated by Ofqual, it must comply with strict national requirements covering assessment quality, delivery, moderation, learner protection, and organisational governance. If an awarding body is not regulated by Ofqual, it is not required to meet these regulatory standards or undergo external monitoring.
OCN London is an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, which means they operate under rigorous rules and ongoing oversight. Although our qualification is bespoke and therefore cannot be Ofqual-regulated, being awarded by OCN London ensures that our course has been quality-assured by a nationally regulated and trusted organisation.
Recognition: While bespoke qualifications cannot be placed on the Ofqual Register, our course is awarded by OCN London, an awarding organisation that is fully regulated by Ofqual. This means our Level 5 has been externally quality-assured by a body required to meet national standards. For learners, employers, clients, and insurers, this offers reassurance that the training comes from a credible, regulated source, even though the qualification itself is bespoke.
Professional Credibility: Training awarded by an Ofqual-regulated organisation demonstrates a commitment to high professional standards and industry best practice. OCN London’s rigorous quality assurance processes help ensure that your knowledge and skills reflect nationally recognised expectations. The learning outcomes and assessment criteria within our Level 5 Bespoke Qualification have been benchmarked at Level 5 using national qualification framework descriptors. Insurance & Compliance: Because OCN London is regulated by Ofqual, insurers and professional bodies can be confident that the awarding organisation operates under strict national standards designed to support quality, fairness, and safe practice. While our qualification is bespoke and therefore not Ofqual-regulated, OCN London’s regulated status means that the processes used to verify and quality-assure the course follow robust, externally monitored expectations.

Reaching Level 5: A Level 5 will provide a much more advanced understanding of sports and remedial massage techniques within clinical practice. You will learn how to perform comprehensive assessments, develop individualised treatment plans for complex injuries, and use advanced techniques for recovery and rehabilitation. A Level 5 qualification can lead to roles in high-performance sports settings or specialised clinical environments.
