Yoga & Pilates Classes:

At NLSSM we believe that for optimum health of any tissue it is best supported by a variety of approaches that should include movement. We currently offer two such approaches that support and develop optimum soft tissue function. We recommend clients to investigate a class or activity that suits them and to incorporate these types of skills into their regular regime as a preventative measure as well as for restoration.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is an approach to healthcare that emphasizes the role of the musculoskeletal system in health and disease. In most countries, osteopathy has been considered a form of complementary medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach and the skilled use of a range of manual and physical treatment interventions in the prevention and treatment of disease. In practice, this most commonly relates to musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain. Osteopathic principles teach that treatment of the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles and joints) facilitates the recuperative powers of the body.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation. This encompasses physical, psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing. It involves the interaction between physiotherapist, patients/clients, other health professionals, families, caregivers, and communities in a process where movement potential is assessed and goals are agreed upon, using knowledge and skills unique to physiotherapists.

Pilates

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany. The program focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy

Today there is a common definition that has emerged from the name itself, “sports massage”, which is the application of a variety of soft tissue techniques to maximize performance of an athlete. This is partially true, but the manner in which we get our results will often include remedial techniques such as soft tissue release or muscle energy techniques. Furthermore it can also be argued that the same techniques and approaches we use in sports massage are not exclusive but can be applied to those who do not do any sport or just have a passing interest in activity and/or movement. In essence Sport and Remedial Massage is about working with soft tissue in order to restore it to its' optimal condition.

Sports Therapy

Provides a comprehensive musculoskeletal assessment for acute and chronic conditions/injuries. Can take you through a fully structured individualized rehabilitation program by using a multitude of manual therapy, soft tissue mobilizations, exercise therapy and electrotherapy techniques to address the cause as well as the symptoms. Guiding you from early injury through to full function, up to and beyond your former levels with an emphasis on minimizing the chance of the injury recurring.

Sports Thai Massage

Based on the principles of both Thai and Sports Massage Paula has combined the two disciplines to deliver a comprehensive and effective therapy.

Thai Massage

Thai massage originated in India and is based on ayurveda and yoga. The technique combines massage with yoga-like positions during the course of the massage; the northern style emphasizes stretching while the southern style emphasizes acupressure.

Yoga

Yoga is one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. This system of balancing the body, mind and spirit was formulated by ancient yogis, who understood man's essential nature and realised a way to utilise all of man's inner resources to live in harmony with himself and the environment.

Pupils learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture). Pranayama (breath control) is gradually introduced once students have a firm foundation of yoga practise. Yoga practice both relaxes and energizes the body and mind and brings vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm. Yoga is suitable for all types of people and all levels of fitness. Practicing Yoga helps you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and well-being.

Profiles

Adele Craciun - Yoga Instructor

Adèle Craciun is a CYQ Level 3 qualified Hatha yoga instructor. She has been practicing yoga since 1999 and teaching since 2007. Her classes vary in style, level and content to suit the time of day and the individual needs of the participants. An average class will however incorporate asana (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing exercises) and some form of meditation. Classes aim to improve flexibility and strength as well as to calm the mind. Music is sometimes used during the practice to help create a peaceful atmosphere.

Adele believes in teaching inclusive classes and puts emphasis on getting each student to take responsibility for their own practice and work at a level that suits their body. She will therefore teach both beginner and advanced asana variations throughout a session in order to keep everyone engaged. She believes that yoga should be a challenge for both body and mind but still contain an element of fun.

Philip Bishop - Pilates Instructor

The foundation of my work is to assist my clients in movement awareness, posture and balance. I’ve been practicing sports massage since 1998 and Pilates since 2005. Working at my Stoke Newington practice for seven years has given me extensive experience with clients recovering from back injury, repetitive strain injury, and sports people seeking to avoid injury. My mat work classes focus on applying Pilates techniques to daily life and making movement fun and accessible. Pilates works by targeting the deep postural muscles, helping to improve your general body usage patterns and postural awareness. Pilates increases strength and flexibility, relieves tension and helps restore qualities that may have been lost due to pain, injury or poor posture. Pilates is beneficial to anyone, regardless of their age or fitness level.
